Defective Saturn Vue Crossovers Recalled By GM
General Motors is recalling 42,408 of its 2008 and 2009 Saturn Vue crossovers because the power steering fluid in these vehicles could leak onto the exhaust system causing hazardous vehicle fires. According to an article on Consumeraffairs.com, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that some of these vehicles have a condition in which “the nut securing the power steering line to the power steering pump may loosen.”
As a result of the nut loosening, the fluid could leak from the power steering system and come in contact with hot exhaust components. This condition increases the likelihood of an engine compartment fire, which could result in injuries or fatalaties, NHTSA officials warn.
Consumers who own these model vehicles should be receiving the recall notices in the mail very soon. Saturn dealers will inspect the steering system and if necessary tighten the nut attaching the hydraulic line to the power steering pump. If fluid has already leaked from the power steering system, they will replace it in addition to tightening the nut. The recall is scheduled to begin later this week. Consumers with questions are asked to call General Motors at 1-800-972-8876.
This was an important recall because of the seriousness of the auto defect. Vehicle fires, especially those that occur when the vehicle is running, have the potential to cause serious injuries and death. The Saturn Vue has had its share of defects this year. Earlier this year, in May, GM recalled its 2008 models for a transmission defect, which could cause the vehicle to roll without warning and cause injury to people in its path.
If you or someone you love has been seriously injured by a defective Saturn Vue or because of any other auto defect, I’d like to hear about it.
