Federal Officials Open New Auto Product Defect Investigation Into Toyota Pickups
A federal agency has opened a new vehicle defect investigation into corrosion issues on 218,000 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has apparently opened a preliminary probe into spare tires and brake lines on 2000 and 2001 model year Toyota Tundra pickup trucks. According to the Detroit News, the agency has so far received 20 reports about Tundra pickups where the spare tires separated and severe frame corrosion has led to brake failure. There have been 15 reports alleging that the "upper body mounted spare tire separated from the rear crossmember and five reports alleging broken brake lines at the proportioning valve that is located on the driver's side of the rear crossmember at upper shock mount."
Recent Auto Product Defect Recall
This investigation comes in the wake of the largest Toyota vehicle recall yet. The Japanese auto maker recalled 3.8 million 2004-2009 model year Toyota sedans after reports that sudden and unexpected accelerations may be caused by defective floor mats that could jam the gas pedal. The defective product issue involving the floor mats came to light after a San Diego car accident killed California Highway Patrol officer Mark Saylor and three members of his family.
Both tire and brake defects are extremely serious. Tire failure can result in fatal car accidents as can brake problems. In either scenario, it is tough even for an experienced driver to regain control of the vehicle. These are critical auto safety issues that must be addressed right away. There is no question that these defective vehicles must be recalled. Consumers should be warned about these defects so that such tragedies may be prevented in the future.
