Chrysler, Mazda Issue Auto Product Defect Recalls
Chrysler is issuing a vehicle defect recall for many of its rear wheel drive Chrysler and Dodge models because they may have been built without a front wheel spindle nut. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, this could basically lead to a tire-wheel separation when the vehicle is in motion leading to a serious car accident. The models affected by this recall include: Chrysler 300 2009-2010; Dodge Challenger 2009 and 2010 models; and Dodge Charger 2009-2010. When the recall begins, dealers will inspect the tire and wheel assembly and if necessary, repair the spindle nut installation at no charge to the consumer.
Recall Involves Faulty Switches
Mazda is also recalling its B Series trucks from the 1995-1997 and 2001-2003 model years. This recall affects those vehicles that are equipped with speed control deactivation switches or anti-lock brake systems manufactured by Texas Instruments before December 5, 2002. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officials say that a component of the cruise control deactivation switch may deteriorate over time and develop a leak, which can then cause the switch to overheat and cause a fire under the hood. These fires can happen even when the vehicle is not in operation or when the engine is not running.
These are both serious problems that could result in dangerous car accidents or car fires. Mazda's issues are very similar to what Ford has been facing. The auto maker recently issued a massive recall for cruise control switches manufactured by Texas Instruments, which posed a fire hazard.
Auto Product Liability Issues
As California auto products liability lawyers, we are well aware of the devastating consequences unsuspecting consumers face because of these dangerous or defective automobiles. We have represented numerous clients in personal injury or wrongful death cases that have involved defective auto parts. In almost all cases, my observation has been that the personal injuries or death could have been prevented had the auto maker acknowledged the problem and fixed it. But very often, auto makers don't do that because it costs them a lot of money not to mention the bad publicity associated with a recall. They tend to put profits ahead of the safety of their consumers. And every time they do that, it's the consumer who suffers the deadly consequences.
