GM Cars Recalled For Fire Hazard
General Motors has issued a vehicle defect recall involving about 53,000 Chevy, Pontiac and Saturn cars over a possible fire danger. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the auto maker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have issued a recall after determining that a fuel leak can lead to a vehicle fire. The recalled models include 2006-2007 Chevy Cobalt; 2007 Pontiac G5; and 2006-2007 Saturn Ion.
Vehicles Recalled for Fire Danger
According to NHTSA officials, GM is recalling the Cobalt and Ion cars that were sold in or currently registered in Arizona and Nevada as well as 2007 Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Ion vehicles sold in or now registered in California, Arizona, Florida, Nevada and Texas. Officials say the plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly may crack. If either of these ports develops a crack, there could be a fuel leak. If the crack gets large enough, fuel may drip to the ground. In the presence of an ignition source, this product defect could cause a fire, officials say. When the recall begins, dealers will replace the fuel pump modular at no cost to the consumer.
Any time there is a fuel leak from these vehicles, it is extremely dangerous, because as the official NHTSA report says, in the presence of an ignition source, the vehicle could catch fire causing car accidents, devastating injuries, death and severe property damage. In April, GM recalled nearly 1.5 million defective cars over the possibility of engine fires. That recall involved GM's Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac brands. All of those recalled vehicles have a naturally aspirated 3.8 liter V6 engines.
Auto Product Liability Issues
This particular product defect recall shows some auto makers still need to make a lot of improvements, especially in quality control. If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a car accident because of a defective vehicle or a defective product, it would be in your best interest to contact a nationally renowned California personal injury lawyer, especially one who has a successful record against large domestic and foreign auto makers. In any car accident that involves a defective car, it is important to preserve the most important piece of evidence -- the vehicle, so it can be examined by an expert for vehicle defects, mechanical malfunctions or other evidence.
