E. coli Tainted Beef Results in Serious Food Poisoning Cases Nationwide

E. coli-contaminated beef, which was recalled in December over food poisoning concerns, has sickened 21 people in 16 states including California, according to a news article in Consumer Reports. Out of the 21 food poisoning victims, nine have been hospitalized and there is at least one reported case of hemolytic uremic syndrome or HUS, a dangerous condition that could lead to kidney damage or even death.

Beef Recall

On December 24, 2009, National Steak and Poultry recalled 248,000 pounds of beef because of E. coli contamination. The meat was apparently sold to restaurants and chains nationwide. Restaurants from at least five chains were among those who received the contaminated meat. These included the Olive Garden, Applebee's, Moe's Southwest Grill, Carino's Italian and KRM Inc., which operates 15 locations of the 54th Street Grill and Bar. One victim is said to be in California. But we do not know where the most seriously injured victims are from or whether there have been other unreported cases in California. So far, no deaths have been reported in connection with this product recall.

Potentially Lethal Bacteria

This particular strain of E. coli bacteria is a potentially lethal. It can apparently cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. Very young people, persons with a weak immune system and the elderly are the most susceptible to food-borne illnesses, especially E. coli infection.

Precautions Must be Taken

As consumers, it is very important for us to always be conscious about safe food-handling practices. Before handling raw meat, always wash hands with warm, soapy water. The raw meat should be kept away from other food that will not be cooked in order to avoid cross-contamination. Ground beef and poultry must be cooked to a high enough temperature. An internal temperature of 160 degrees is good enough to kill any harmful bacteria that are present in the meat. Also, please remember to refrigerate raw meat and poultry within two hours of purchase.

It is the responsibility of food manufacturers and food service providers such as restaurants and cafeterias to provide food that is safe for customers to eat. If you believe you have been sickened by food you purchased at a supermarket or at a restaurant, please file a complaint with a local health department. You would also be well advised to contact an experienced California personal injury lawyer, who will be able to advise you about your legal rights and possible course of action.
