Cadmium-Tainted Jewelry Sold at Wal-Mart Recalled
FAF Inc. has issued a defective product recall for about 55,000 children's necklaces sold at Wal-Mart that are believed to contain high levels of cadmium. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the recalled children's jewelry, made in China, is shaped as a metal crown or frog pendant on a metal link chain necklace in a crown hinged box. The packaging has the words "The Princess and the Frog" on it. These recalled necklaces were sold only at Wal-Mart stores nationwide from November 2009 through January 2010 for about $5. Those who have these recalled items in their homes are asked to take them away from children immediately and return them to any Wal-Mart store for a full refund or free replacement product.
Investigation Showed Cadmium Contamination
Wal-Mart has been pulling a number of products, especially children's jewelry off the shelves, after Associated Press did an in-depth investigation about cadmium-contaminated jewelry. Associated Press apparently lab-tested 103 items bought in four states including California, in the months of November and December. The results showed that 12 percent of the jewelry contained at least 10 percent cadmium. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has until now, never recalled any items for excessive levels of cadmium.
Highly Toxic Substance
Cadmium is an extremely dangerous metal. In fact, it ranks seven on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) priority list of the 275 most hazardous substances in the environment. According to CDC's Web site cadmium exposure can cause kidney, lung or bone damage in children. It is clear that cadmium has the potential to cause serious personal injuries and long-term health effects in children.
CPSC officials last year issued stringent safety standards with regard to excessive levels of lead. However, so far, there are no safety standards for cadmium, which is also extremely toxic. It is alarming that excessive levels of cadmium are present in toys and items that are used by young children. It is an unconscionable action on the part of these manufacturers to expose our little ones to this toxic substance.
