WinCo Foods has expanded a recall of all its fresh ground beef products sold in all its California stores because of a food poisoning concern. According to a news report in the Food Business Review, the original recall issued April 10, was for ground beef sold at WinCo’s Modesto store only. An independent lab apparently tested two samples of ground beef purchased at the Modesto store and found that it tested positive for E. coli bacteria. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is investigating as is the California Department of Public Health. The federal and state agencies have recommended that the company expand the recall.

The products involved in this recall are fresh ground beef products packed in Styrofoam trays with a sale date of March 28, 2010 through April 9, 2010. So far no illnesses have been reported in connection with these products.

Toyota Motor Corporation has issued yet another auto product defect recall, this time for the 2010 Lexus GX 460, because of concerns that it can roll over during emergency maneuvers. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, this particular recall comes only days after Consumer Reports magazine issued an uncommon “Do Not Buy” warning about the luxury SUV. Toyota immediately halted sales of the SUV after the magazine article came out.

This is one additional recall for Toyota, to a list that already includes millions of other recalled vehicles worldwide, for sudden acceleration problems and other defects. Toyota this week paid a $16.4 million federal government fine for not acting promptly to recall these defective vehicles with faulty gas pedals, floor mats and brakes.

Toyota Issues Auto Product Defect Recall for Sienna Minivans

Toyota Motor Corporation has issued a vehicle defect recall for about 600,000 of its Sienna minivans sold in the United States due to rusting spare tire cables that could break and create a hazard on the roadways. According to an Associated Press news report, the recent Toyota recall involves 1998 to 2010 model year Sienna minivans with two-wheel drive that have been sold or registered in 20 cold climate states and the District of Columbia. Apparently, rust from road salt could cause the carrier cable that holds the spare tire to rust and break, allowing the tire to fall on the roadway and pose a potential traffic hazard. So far, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports six complaints of the spare tires falling off Sienna minivans.

San Diego Car Accident Injures Teenager

A 17-year-old girl sustained serious injuries in a San Diego car accident the morning of April 15, 2010 when she drove past closed-road signs on Carlsbad Boulevard and ran into barricades and a piece of construction equipment. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the teen was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck. Carlsbad police officials said the truck had traveled about 2,100 feet past several closed road signs and other barricades such as barrels and even a chain-link fence. The road was closed for a bridge construction project. The girl was extricated from the vehicle and transported to an area hospital.

I sympathize with this young woman and her family for what they are going through at this time. Apparently, the girl was camping with her family at the beach, but had driven home to feed the cat and was heading back to the camp site when the crash occurred. I wish this injured victim the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep her in your prayers.
