Darrell K. Mervin, 49, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after he lost control of his SUV and crashed into a tree. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the fatal crash occurred early morning on September 16, 2010 on La Brea Avenue near Santa Monica Boulevard. His vehicle entered the sidewalk after hitting a tree on the side of the road. Officials are looking into what caused this fatal car accident.

Orange County Car Accident Proves Fatal

Ernesto Daza, 64, was killed in an Orange County car accident after he lost control of his vehicle on the freeway. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Daza was driving a Toyota Corolla in the number one lane of the 405 Freeway in Seal Beach the afternoon of September 16, 2010. California Highway Patrol officials say he appeared to have lost control while making a lane change. The Toyota took a sharp right turn, crossed all lanes and overturned on the shoulder. Daza sustained fatal injuries. No one else was injured in the crash.

In August 2010, the DePuy Orthopaedics unit of Johnson & Johnson recalled the ASRâ„¢ Hip System used as a hip implant after more than two years of complaints and complications.

The ASR Hip System manufactured by the DePuy Orthropaedics unit of Johnson & Johnson has been recalled due to a variety of product defects. Patients who have had the hip implant installed have been complaining about complications with the product for over two years.

Ford SUV Rollover Hit-and-Run Crash Proves Fatal Near King City

Andreas Ortega Hernandez, 34, was killed in an SUV rollover accident the morning of September 22, 2010, The Californian reports. California Highway Patrol officials say the fieldworker was traveling with several others in a Ford Expedition SUV on southbound Highway 101 near King City, when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into the median and rolled over. Hernandez died at the scene. Daniel Lopez, 22, and 34-year-old Daniel Silva suffered non-life threatening injuries. A fourth passenger sustained major injuries.

Drug maker, Abbott Laboratories announced a defective product recall for millions of containers of its Similac baby formula believed to be contaminated with insect parts. According to an Associated Press news report, the Similac baby formula recall involves 5 million of the company’s top-selling Similac-brand powder formulas. Company spokespersons say the formula could contain a small beetle or larvae, which could cause stomach ache and digestion problems in a baby.

Toyota Motor Corp. has settled a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from a fiery car accident in San Diego, which drew international attention and spurred an unprecedented recall of Toyota vehicles over sudden and unintended acceleration issues. According to a news report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the settlement was reached between victim Mark Saylor’s family members and Toyota. However, Bob Baker Lexus, the car dealership in El Cajon that loaned the vehicle to Saylor has not been freed by the settlement.

Enterprise Settles Class Action Lawsuit

Enterprise has entered into a $14 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit over sold vehicles that lacked the standard side airbags. According to a McClatchy Newspaper report, the class-action lawsuit involves more than 100,000 owners of certain Chevrolet and Buick models. The car rental company for three years ordered new vehicles, mostly Impalas, without side curtain airbags, which were otherwise a standard in the vehicles. This put occupants of the cars at risk for catastrophic injuries or even death in the event of a side-impact crash. With the deletion of these side curtain airbags, the company saved $175 per vehicle.

The FDA has recently found that long-term users of the pharmaceutical drug Reglan are at risk for developing a neurological disease called tardive dyskinesia if using the drug for longer than 12 weeks. Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by repetitive involuntary movements of limbs, eyes, and lips, grimacing and twitching.

Fatal San Bernardino Car Accident

Vannity Joy Lewis, 18, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident after the vehicle in which she was a passenger blew a tire and rolled over the evening of September 19, 2010. According to a news report in The San Bernardino County Sun, the Volkswagen Jetta was travelling in the southbound lanes of the 15 Freeway near Baseline Road in Rancho Cucamonga, when one of its tires blew out causing the vehicle to flip several times. Lewis was ejected from the car and died at the scene. One person sustained major injuries and three others suffered moderate injuries in the crash, officials said.
