Five adults and a baby are lucky to have survived a car accident, which officials say, was caused by a teen driver who ran a red light. According to a news report in the Santa Maria Times, the rollover accident occurred the afternoon of January 26, 2011 at the intersection of Skyway Drive and Fairway Drive in Santa Maria. A Plymouth van driven by 17-year-old Yuri Alma Hernandez, which was eastbound on Fairway, ran a red light. The van was broadsided by a 1991 Nissan Sentra, which was traveling north on Skyway.

The impact of the crash caused the van to roll onto its side. Hernandez, 45-year-old Francisca Manuela Vivar and a 1-year-old girl, were transported to a local hospital to be examined. The driver of the Sentra, 25-year-old Fidel Martinez Santos, and two of his passengers escaped uninjured. Police say both, Santos and Hernandez, do not have a driver’s license or car insurance.

It is indeed fortunate that no one sustained major or fatal injuries in this rollover accident. I wish the injured the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Johnson & Johnson Defective Hip Replacement Implants

After an embarrassing recall of Johnson & Johnson’s defective ASR units, consumers are starting to look towards product manufacturers who do not have a history of dangerous product defects. Unfortunately, since we are currently riding a tsunami of recalls it is becoming practically impossible to find a company that has not released some sort of plague upon unsuspecting victims. This has left the nation scrambling to differentiate between grossly negligent manufacturers from mildly incompetent ones. Either way, we are making a compromise that we shouldn’t have to make.

Product Liability Claims

Johnson & Johnson has two products currently facing products liability claims: the ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur, a method intended to preserve more bone. Approximately 93,000 hip replacement devices have been implanted worldwide. IN the United States, the F.D.A. has received about 400 complaints since early 2008 from patients who had the hip replacement devices implanted.

There is no official reason for why the DePuy ASR hip implant is prone to early failure. In 2005 the FDA cleared the DePUY ASR Acetabular Cup System to be used in tradition hip replacement, although it was not required to undergo clinical trials. Since 2008, over 300 complaints regarding the DePuy ASR cup have been received by the FDA involving U.S. patients.

Toyota Recalls Lexus Vehicles for Possible Fuel Leaks

Toyota has issued a vehicle defect recall for nearly 1.7 million cars worldwide including Lexus IS and GS sedans in the United States for fuel leak problems. According to a news report in USA Today, the recall was for improper installation of a fuel pressure sensor that could allow it to vibrate loose, causing fuel to leak in the engine compartment. The vehicles involved in this particular recall are 2006-2007 Lexus GS300/350 sedans, 2006-2009 Lexus IS250 sedans and 2006 to early 2008 Lexus IS350 sedans. So far, Toyota officials say, there have been no reports of accidents or deaths. But they have received 75 complaints in North America and more than 140 in Japan.

Major Toyota Recall

When the recall begins, dealers will inspect the vehicles for leaks and re-torque the sensor if there are no leaks. If a leak already exists, the sensor gasket and line will also be replaced. A second leak recall involves a bad fuel line that can crack. But that affects about 141,000 cars not sold in the United States.

This latest recall brings Toyota global recall total since December 2009 to more than 12 million, a majority of which affected the United States. The Japanese auto maker’s troubles began with sudden acceleration problems. This recall is apparently an indication of Toyota keeping up its promise to come clean quickly on any problem. This is after the company paid up millions in government fines after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determined that the auto maker deliberately delayed vehicle defect recalls and failed to fix important safety problems.
