Volvo Recalls Cars for Power Steering Defects

Volvo Cars is issuing an auto defect recall for about 8,400 of its S80 cars for a problem with its power steering. According to a Reuters news report, the recall involves 2007 model year cars manufactured between March 8, 2006 and May 16, 2007. The problem involves a hose at the steering gear that could rupture and cause a sudden loss of power steering. This could increase the risk of a potential crash.

When the recall begins next month, Volvo dealers will inspect the cars and make repairs as needed and at no charge. The company has estimated 6 percent of the vehicles in the group would be defective. Volvo officials say they have not received any reports so far of car accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Vehicle Recall System Needs Improvement, GAO Study Shows

A recent report released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) points out the various problems associated with auto defect recalls. According to a news report in The Safety Record, the main problem is that many have been catastrophically injured and/or killed because the defective and recalled components in their vehicles had not been fixed.

This GAO report is seen as an outcome of the Toyota sudden acceleration issue and the spate of recalls that resulted. GAO notes that 2010 saw the largest number of auto defect recalls in the history of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This unprecedented number was largely due to millions of vehicles recalled by Toyota for sticky gas pedals and faulty floor mats that caused sudden or unintended acceleration.
