One Killed, Two Injured in Los Angeles Car Accident

Jonathan Guzman Vaca, 22, of Diamond Bar was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after his 2003 Nissan 350Z was struck by two big rigs. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal truck accident occurred at Azusa Avenue on the 60 Freeway in Industry, the morning of October 29, 2011.

California Highway Patrol officials say that Vaca’s Nissan 350Z veered out of control, and struck two big rigs and the freeway’s center divider. A 2000 Nissan Frontier SUV driven by a 33-year-old Pomona man then struck one of the big rigs. Vaca was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Frontier and a 27-year-old truck driver from Anaheim sustained major injuries. A 64-year-old truck driver from Fontana suffered minor injuries. Investigators are trying to determine what caused Vaca to lose control of the vehicle.

Honda Investigating Complaints about Exploding Airbags

Honda Motor Company has opened an investigation into a possible vehicle defect after complaints from drivers that the vehicle’s airbags are exploding for no reason. According to a WSBTV news report, 26-year-old Chris Androvic complained to Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about these defective airbags that tend to deploy suddenly. Androvic says he was driving his 2008 Honda Accord coupe at 60 to 65 mph when suddenly his airbags exploded. He says the car was not hit. The airbags above his head and in his seat deployed draping over the side windows and cutting his visibility. As a result of the explosion, Androvic also says he lost his hearing temporarily.

Chevy and GMC Vehicles Recalled for Bad Tire Pressure Monitoring

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced an auto defect recall involving about 34,000 GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox vehicles. According to Consumer Reports, the cross-over vehicles from GM have tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) that fail to comply with federal safety standards. These TPMS computers are designed to alert drivers if their tires’ air pressure falls 25 percent below the recommended cold inflation pressure. However, the TPMS in these recalled vehicles will not illuminate the dashboard warning lights until the internal tire pressures are more than 25 percent below the recommended pressure levels.

Fatal San Bernardino Motorcycle Accident

Jesus Jesse Campos, 36, was killed in a motorcycle accident after he lost control of his vehicle and hit a big rig. According to a news report in The San Bernardino County Sun, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred the evening of October 24, 2011. California Highway Patrol officials say Campos was entering the eastbound 10 Freeway at Cherry Avenue in Fontana, when he lost control and slid into the back tires of a tractor trailer. Campos was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market, for the second time in a month, is recalling bagged spinach over food poisoning concerns. According to an NBC news report, the Los Angeles-based company is recalling bags of washed spinach for possible contamination with listeria bacteria. Company officials say a bag of spinach with the October 16, 2011 “enjoy by” date tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The spinach was sold in Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores in California, Nevada and Arizona. Customers who have these bags of spinach at home are asked to throw away the spinach in the bags and return the empty bags or their receipts for a full refund.

Harley-Davidson Motorcycles Recalled for Defective Brakes

Harley-Davidson Inc. is issuing an auto defect recall for more than 250,000 motorcycles due to brake issues. According to a news report in The Wall Street Journal, the motorcycle maker is recalling certain models of touring motorcycles, trikes and models from its Custom Vehicle Operations for the 2009 and 2012 model years. According to a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the brake light switch could be damaged in these vehicles by heat from the exhaust systems.

Man Killed in Riverside Rollover Accident

Brandon Keator, 22, was killed in a Riverside car accident after his vehicle rolled over and he was ejected, the night of October 17, 2011. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, the rollover accident occurred along Interstate 10 near Highway 60 in Beaumont. California Highway Patrol officials say Keator’s vehicle veered out of control, struck a guardrail and overturned. Keator was ejected from the vehicle and fatally injured. An investigation into the cause of the fatal rollover crash is underway.
