Depuy Defective Hip Implants Still a Problem

Over the last few years, Johnson and Johnson’s orthopaedic unit has been creating a hip replacement that does more damage than good. On August 26, 2010, the company finally announced that it was recalling the product for good because many of the patients who received the implant needed a second surgery to fix the problems caused by the first.

This is unacceptable!

The Product Details

The company recalled two products: the ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur, a method intended to preserve more bone. The company had received 400 complaints about the hip replacement as of last year, and that number has gone up significantly.

Expedited Jury Trial Act is a Win for Consumers

In a rare cooperative effort, consumer rights attorneys and attorneys for organizations committed to “capping” damages awards, worked together to facilitate the passing of the Expedited Jury Trial Act (officially known as AB2284). With the passage of the act, consumers with smaller personal injury cases can obtain qualified counsel, such as the lawyers at BISNAR | CHASE, and pursue their claims, assuring everyone should have a right to justice and their day in court.

Consumers with potentially smaller causes of action will now be able to afford their day in court. The bill allows the Judicial Council to amend trial procedure rules in a manner that streamlines the case and allows smaller cases to be heard quickly and more efficiently. With the passage of the Expedited Jury Trial Act, consumers with smaller personal injury cases can obtain qualified counsel and pursue their claims. Rep. Darrell Issa Calls for Investigation of FDA in Johnson & Johnson’s Motrin Phantom Recall

We would like to applaud Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Representative, and senior Republican on the House Oversight Committee, for stepping up and calling the FDA to task for their lax and potentially criminal oversight of Johnson & Johnson’s 2009 shady recall of Motrin.

This “phantom recall” of Motrin by Johnson & Johnson began in 2009, when a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson’s, McNeil, hired private contractors to buy up defective Motrin from retailer shelves, rather than launching a national recall and alerting the public. The contractors were instructed to “[r]un in, find the product, make your purchases and run out.” They were told “[t]here must be no mention of this being a recall of the product.”

Re-elect Sharon Wallin for Irvine School Board

I’ve known Sharon Wallin since our girls went to South Lake Middle School. She was always the top parent volunteer, hands down. I was on a committee Sharon led in the Irvine School District, and I can tell you she is a great, inspiring and hard-working leader. She has done a superb job on the school board and she deserves to be re-elected. Ford Motor Company to Pay Multi-Million Dollar Settlement to Family in Wrongful Death Lawsuit

New York Mets hopeful, Brian Cole, was killed in 2001 after his Ford Explorer was involved in a rollover car accident at highway speeds.

Ford claims the verdict, from a Jasper County Mississippi jury, is unfair because certain evidence was excluded from the trial. “This was a tragic accident, and our sympathy goes out to the Cole family for their loss, but it [is] unfair of them to blame Ford,” said Ford spokesperson, Marcey Evans.

Are You Consuming Salmonella Tainted Eggs?

A number of food poisoning cases involving salmonella tainted eggs are under investigation by the FDA and CDC. The agencies have been searching for potential sources of the tainted eggs. So far, potential sources include Wright County Egg in Iowa and Hillandale Farms of Iowa, Inc.

In late August 2010, Hillandale Farms conducted a voluntary recall due to the possibility of salmonella contamination. A number of these eggs could still be in restaurants, grocery stores or your home. If you feel ill after eating a recalled egg, you should consult with your doctor.

Defective Johnson & Johnson Hip Replacement Implants Recalled

Johnson & Johnson has issued a recall for defective hip replacement implants after many patients complained that the implants failed and that they had to have more unnecessary surgery as a result. According to a news report in the New York Times, the recall came this week, over two years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began receiving complaints about the failure of these hip replacement implants, manufactured by DePuy Orthopedics, a unit of Johnson & Johnson.

Hundreds of Complaints

DePuy is recalling two products — the ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur, a method intended to preserve more bone. About 93,000 of these devices have been implanted worldwide. Since the beginning of 2008, the FDA has received about 400 complaints from patients who got the devices.
