Chrysler is issuing a vehicle defect recall for about 355,562 minivans to fix a problem with an airbag sensor. According to a Reuters news report, the recall campaign involves 259,437 vehicles in the United States, including the 2005-2006 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans. Chrysler officials say one of the front airbag crash sensors could crack under certain environmental conditions and allow water to enter the sensor. This could potentially cause the sensor to become inoperative. This could cause the airbag to fail in the event of a car accident. If you own one of these recalled vehicles, please take your minivan to a dealer as soon as possible to have it evaluated.
Defective Airbags Can Cause Serious Injuries
The technology of airbags has improved tremendously over the last decade. But we continue to see a number of defective airbag recalls involving several auto makers. In some cases, the airbags fail to deploy and in other cases, they deploy at the wrong time, both of which are dangerous. When airbags fail to deploy during a crash, the results can be devastating. An airbag that does not deploy can cause catastrophic injuries and even death. We count on airbags to offer us that extra layer of protection in the event of a car accident.
According to several recent studies, more people are injured or killed as a result of airbag defects that lead to the airbag not deploying than from faulty deployment. This non-deployment of airbags is becoming increasingly deadly. A detailed investigative report by the Kansas City Star in 2007, puts the number of fatalities involving those who were killed as a result of airbags not deploying at four times more than the number of people who died as a result of faulty airbag deployment.
