Ford Motor Company has said it will issue an auto defect recall of nearly 150,000 Ford-F150 pickup trucks to fix a problem with the airbags that could deploy suddenly without warning. According to an Associated Press news report, the recall covers trucks from the 2005-2006 model years in the United States and Canada. The recall was apparently issued under pressure from the federal government. However, the scope of the recall is much smaller than what the government requested.
According to Ford, an airbag wire located in the steering wheel could have been improperly positioned so it would chafe, expose bare copper and create the possibility of a short circuit.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), so far, 77 injuries have been attributed to the defective airbagissue. The government issued a memo in November that the auto maker should recall about 1.3 million Ford F-150 pickup trucks from the 2004 to 2006 model years. The U.S. Department of Transportation currently reviewing the recall in order to determine if the auto maker’s response was adequate. If the government determines that it was not, then, a public hearing could be held to determine if Ford should expand the recall further.
NHTSA has so far cited 238 cases where the airbags deployed improperly. In one case, a customer jumped from the vehicle after the airbag deployed while the truck was parked in a driveway. In fact, Ford made production changes to the trucks in 2006 and 2007 to fix airbag wiring, but had issued no recall.
Auto Products Liability Issues
It is appalling given the number of injuries caused by these defective airbags that Ford did not see the need for a recall. Apparently, Ford officials said that the number “was low” and that the injuries were minor. I wonder if they were just waiting for a catastrophic injury or death to consider issuing a recall? Ford issued a statement saying owners got sufficient warning from the airbag warning light. The recall is expected to begin in early March.
