General Motors and Chrysler announced Thursday, November 11, 2010 that they are recalling 30,000 vehicles due to power steering problems and a faulty windshield wiper system, respectively. This recall is the latest of many recent U.S. auto recalls. In fact, Nissan announced a recall the same day for 600,000 Frontiers and Xterras due to lower steering column joint problems that lead to corrosion. Luckily, GM and Chrysler have not reported any accidents or injuries in connection with these most recent recalls. Furthermore, GM and Chrysler dealers are setting up to repair and replace defective parts at no charge to the owner later this month.

GM’s Recall

General Motors is recalling about 14,000 sedans because of power steering problems. The recall involves certain 2010 and 2011 Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne sedans with V8 engines. Most of the 14,000 recalled vehicles are the Cadillac DTS. The recalled sedans have alternator cables that can potentially wear through a power steering line which can in turn lead to a fluid leak. A fluid leak could cause a loss of power steering which can cause an accident, injuries or worse. If the fluid leaks onto hot engine parts it could cause a fire.

Chrysler’s Recall

Meanwhile, Chrysler’s recall involves more than 16,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs because of faulty windshield wiper systems. Chrysler’s 2008 model of the SUV is being recalled to replace the windshield wiper motor. The faulty system allows water to get into the wiper motor which can stop the wipers, reducing a driver’s visibility. If the system fails while a car is in motion, it could cause an car accident.
The recall was discovered after the automaker saw a higher rate of faulty wiper motor failures in the 2008 Jeep Liberty. In June 2008, Chrysler’s Toledo Assembly began using a different motor which likely rectified the problem.

If You Have a Recalled Vehicle

The faulty windshield wiper system will be replaced free of charge by Jeep dealers. Chrysler will be notifying owners later this month and the recall repairs are expected to begin in the month of November. Owners can contact Chrysler at 800-853-1403.

For the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne sedans, GM dealers will secure the steering lines, rerouting them if necessary, to prevent contact with the alternator cable. This repair will be done at no cost to owners. The recall is expected to begin by November 19, 2010 with GM sending notices to owners advising them to come in to a dealer in order to have the problem fixed.
