Mazda has issued an auto defect recall for approximately 52,400 SUVs because of a faulty auto part that may present a fire hazard. According to Consumer Reports, Mazda Tribute SUVs made in 2001 and 2002 have issues with their master cylinder that can result in leaking brake fluid. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns that the leaking brake fluid can come into contact with wiring for the anti-lock brake system. If this happens, there is the potential for an engine fire to occur.

Vehicles Involved in the Recall

The recall involves all Mazda Tribute vehicles made between April 20, 2000 and July 19, 2002. Owners of these SUVs are advised to park their vehicles outside until they are able to have their vehicles repaired. Mazda is expected to have started notifying Tribute owners beginning January 30, 2012 about these potential defects. Consumers should contact Mazda directly or the NHTSA for more information. It is unclear from the release if there have been any serious injury car accidents because of this defect.

Dangerous Defects

Brake defects and defects that involve leaking flammable liquids can result in devastating injuries and even death. I’m pleased to note that Mazda is taking efforts to fix these issues. However, I’m also concerned that the automaker is recalling vehicles that are more than 10 years old. When were these problems reported? Did the automaker recall these vehicles in a timely manner?
