Mitsubishi is issuing a vehicle defect recall for about 530 of its Endeavor sport utility vehicles from the 2010 model year. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, Mitsubishi officials are saying that the retainer bracket, which is used for the seat-mounted side airbag frames, may not have been properly welded and could fail in the event of a car accident. The product recall only includes vehicles manufactured between May 26 and July 28, 2009. Dealers will check the weld and, if necessary, replace the seatback assembly free of charge when the recall begins this month.
This is a serious auto product defect because it could potentially lead to the airbag not deploying properly and leaving the occupant injured in case of a car accident. When airbags fail to deploy during a crash, the results can be devastating. An airbag, which does not deploy when it is supposed to, can cause catastrophic injuries and even death. We count on airbags to offer us that extra layer of protection in the event of a car accident.
Airbag Defects Cause Fatalities
According to several recent studies, more people are injured or killed as a result of airbag defects that lead to the airbag not deploying than from faulty deployment. This non-deployment of airbags is becoming increasingly deadly. A detailed investigative report by the Kansas City Star in 2007, puts the number of fatalities involving those who were killed as a result of airbags not deploying at four times more than the number of people who died as a result of faulty airbag deployment.
As we saw with this Mitsubishi recall, there are any number of manufacturing and design defects that can prevent an airbag from deploying. The airbag defect that causes non-deployment may involve defective parts, a manufacturing defects, improper installation or even faulty design.
Auto Products Liability Issues
If you or a loved one has been severely injured or killed as a result of a faulty airbag, you may be eligible to seek compensation from the manufacturer of such a defective product. Whether your injuries involve airbags that deployed when they weren’t supposed to or a non-deployed airbag, the auto maker could be held liable for making the defective auto product.
