A driver sustained injuries in an Orange County car accident after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the back yard of a home. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury accident occurred the morning of August 27, 2010, when a silver Honda was making a right turn onto Via del Rio from Trabuco Road, in Lake Forest. The driver failed to negotiate the turn. The vehicle went over the sidewalk and through a fence. The car fell about 30 feet and nearly went into a swimming pool. An ambulance took the driver of the four-door sedan to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of this car accident.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim of this car accident. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. It is indeed fortunate that no one else in the home was seriously injured or killed as a result of this crash.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were six fatalities and 169 injuries due to car accidents in Lake Forest. In Orange County as a whole, 152 people died and 13,414 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

What Caused this Crash?

Based on this news report, alcohol is not believed to be the cause of the accident. However, it is not clear at this point whether speed was a factor in the crash. There are still a few questions here. Was there a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction that caused this crash? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway, which may have contributed to the crash? It is important to determine exactly what caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle while making that turn. It may very well have been due to driver error, but it is still important to rule out these other factors.

Liability Issues

In cases where an accident was caused by a vehicle defect, the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective product can be held liable for the accident and injuries. If a dangerous or defectively designed roadway caused the accident, then, the city or governmental entity responsible for maintaining that roadway could also be held liable. In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will explain their legal rights and options. It would also be a good idea to preserve the vehicle in its current, crashed condition, unaltered, so it can be thoroughly examined for design defects, auto product defects and other related damages.
