Suzuki Motors of America has issued a recall for as many as 210,000 units of its 2004-2013 GSX-R sport bikes. According to Cycle News, the bikes are being recalled because of corrosion of the brake piston in combination with older brake fluid could result in reduction of fluid pressure transmission to the front brake. As a result, the front braking power may be reduced and increase the risk of a crash. The motorcycles being recalled include certain model year 2004-2013 GSX-R600s and GSX-R750s and 2005-2013 GSX-R1000s.
When the recall begins on November 4, Suzuki will be contacting the owners of the affected units, who in turn can take their GSX-Rs to Suzuki dealers for a free replacement of the front master cylinder. So far, no injuries have been reported as a result of these brake defects.
Brake Defects in Motorcycles
Motorcycles can be exhilarating to drive and they may also save riders a lot of money on gas. However, riding a motorcycle can be dangerous. Motorcyclists must deal not only with hazards on the roadway such as negligent drivers or dangerous roadway conditions, but also defective motorcycles. In this particular case, the brakes could become spongy because of an inherent defect in the motorcycle. As a result, the brakes may not work properly when needed, increasing the risk of a crash.
Injuries and Damages
Motorcycle accidents have the potential to cause catastrophic injuries or even fatalities. Some of the most common injuries suffered in motorcycle accidents include traumatic brain injuries, broken bones, road rash, spinal cord trauma and internal injuries. Injured victims of motorcycle accidents can file a product liability claim against the motorcycle manufacturer or the maker of a defective part, if the crash was caused by a defective product or motorcycle. In such cases injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
Injured victims of motorcycle accidents would also be well advised to contact an experienced California personal injury lawyer who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. The best personal injury and product liability law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
