Samantha Hunter, 22, was critically injured in a car accident the afternoon of July 18, 2010 after she lost control of her vehicle and crashed on the 5 Freeway. According to a news report in the Redding Record-Searchlight, the major injury accident occurred on the freeway in south Redding when Hunter, who was driving in the southbound lanes, suddenly went off the roadway. Her car then rolled over when she tried to get it back on the roadway. Hunter was trapped upside down and had to be extricated from the mangled wreckage. She remains in critical condition. Officials say Hunter sustained two broken legs, internal injuries and may have lost an eye in the crash. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in this accident.

My heart goes out to Samantha Hunter, who has obviously suffered catastrophic injuries in this car accident. I hope she makes it through these critical injuries and pray that she recovers quickly and completely.

Car Accident Statistics

According to CHP’s 2008 traffic accident statistics, there were 10 deaths and 550 injuries involving car accidents in Redding. In Shasta County as a whole, 20 people died and 956 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Car Accident Causes

Based on this news report, there are more questions than answers here. What caused Hunter to lose control of her car? Officials say alcohol or drugs did not play a part. There is no information about Hunter speeding, driving recklessly or about her being fatigued or falling asleep at the wheel. Was there a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction in her vehicle which may have caused this fatal crash? Were there any other auto product defects, which may have caused her critical injuries? Was there a dangerous or defective condition on the roadway that caused her to lose control of the vehicle? I trust officials are looking into these and other important aspects of the collision in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

Liability Issues

If an auto product defect caused this crash, then the auto maker or manufacturer of the defective product can be held liable for the injuries caused. If a dangerous roadway caused the crash, then the governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway could also be held liable.
