Fruit Pops Inc., a company based in Santa Fe Springs has recalled its mamey frozen fruit bars over food poisoning concerns. The frozen fruit bars have been linked to rare outbreak of typhoid fever in the United States. According to an MSNBC news report, the fruit bars were distributed in California, Arizona and Texas through retail stores, ice cream trucks and vending machines. The recalled frozen fruit bars have the UPC number 763734000097.
The cool treats were apparently made from contaminated mamey pulp, which was recalled by Goya Foods Inc. on August 12, 2010 after it was linked to a typhoid fever outbreak in California and Nevada. There are no reports yet of illnesses related to the mamey fruit bars. Mamey or zapote is a fruit, which is popular in Latin American and the Caribbean.
Symptoms of Typhoid Fever
Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria. Typhoid fever is rare in industrialized countries. It usually spreads through contaminated food and water or through close contact with someone who has been infected with the bacteria. Signs and symptoms usually include high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and either constipation or diarrhea. Most people recover when treated with antibiotics. However, in severe cases, typhoid fever may prove fatal. Vaccines against typhoid fever are available, but they’re only partially effective, according to the Mayo Clinic’s web site.
Claim for Compensation
In this particular case, it appears that imported products from South America may have caused this typhoid outbreak. When it comes to food poisoning cases, consumers who have suffered personal injuries have rights. Victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, medication, diagnostic tests and other related damages.
In cases where food poisoning results in death, victims’ families can file a wrongful death claim against the food manufacturer or distributor seeking damages for funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship and emotional distress. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims or their families in such cases about how to pursue their legal rights.
