York International is re-announcing a defective product recall involving 226,000 Coleman, Coleman Evcon and Red T gas furnaces after more than 300 additional incident reports, since the 2004 recall involving these furnaces. According to Consumer Reports, the company has received reports of 393 incidents, including several involving extensive property damage. Also, 366 of those reports were received after the November 2004 recall announcement. So far, no injuries or fatalities have been reported as a result of these defective gas furnaces.

Incident Reports Spur Repeat Recall

The report states that these defective furnaces meant for mobile homes and other types of manufactured homes can overheat and cause the heat exchanger to crack. This can create openings that allow flames to escape. When this occurs, it poses a serious fire hazard, especially when coming into contact with drywall or other flammable items nearby. The furnaces involved in this product recall were manufactured in the United States between 1995 and 2000. About 223,600 of the products in the United States and 2,400 in Canada were recalled. If your home has one of these furnaces, please stop using them right away. Contact UPG Technical Services at 1-888-665-4640 to schedule a free inspection and repair.

Resident Fire Accident Statistics

According to the U.S. Fire Administration’s web site, about 54,500 heating fires occur each year nationwide. Heating is the second leading cause of all residential building fires following cooking. Residential building fires usually peak in January and February. This peak time accounts for 34 percent of fires. Also, 31 percent of residential building heating fires occur because the heat source is too close to combustibles.

Products Liability Issues

Although manufacturers of defective products may issue recalls, the information does not often reach consumers. As a result, these defective products continue to flood the market. Many of the products are also sold as used goods. If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of these defective furnaces or other defective products, you may be able to file a products liability lawsuit against the manufacturer seeking compensation for injuries and damages. Victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, hospitalization, surgeries, burn treatments, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. An experienced California personal injury lawyer, who has successfully handled products liability claims will better advise victims and their families about their legal rights and options.
