Defective Baby Walkers Pose Fall Hazard

Defective Products No Comments
Suntech Enterprises Inc, a Los Angeles area importer, has issued a defective product recall for 8,400 baby walkers. According to an Associated Press news report, the products were manufactured in China and imported by the company. Apparently, these baby walkers lack mechanisms to prevent babies from falling down the stairs. Also, these walkers can fit through standard doorways. Therefore, their size doesn’t prevent them from entering rooms with stair access. So far no incidents have been reported in connection with these products. The walkers were sold at children’s product stores in several states including California, New York and Texas from January 2007 through December 2009.
More Recalls of Baby Walkers
This is not the first product recall for baby walkers this year. In April, Le Hing Inc. issued a recall for baby walkers because of a serious design defect that does not allow the walker to stop at the edge of a step. Babies using such dangerous and defective products are at risk for serious personal injuries or even death.
Recent recalls
This is also one of several nursery products that have been recalled recently due to product defects. According to statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2006, there were about 66,400 emergency department treated injuries associated with nursery products among children under age 5. CPSC’s studies show that falls were the most frequent cause of injuries among young children. Head injuries were the most common in these types of accidents. During the three-year period between 2002 and 2004, CPSC staff had reports of about 241 deaths — an annual average of about 80 fatalities — associated with nursery products among children under age 5.
