Complaints of defective hip replacement implants have been piling up for over two years at Johnson & Johnson. These complaints continued until Johnson & Johnson finally announced on August 26, 2010 that it was recalling the defective hip implants, which DePuy Orthopaedics manufactures. A number of patients who have received the hip implants have had them fail requiring them to receive a second hip replacement.

The two products included in this recall are the ASR XL Acetabular System, a hip socket used in traditional hip replacements, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement product that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur.

Hip Replacement Statistics

In the United States, there are about 120,000 hip replacement operations every year. That is about 13 hip replacements per hour. Worldwide, nearly 93,000 hip replacement devices have been implanted.

Since 2008, the FDA has received about 400 complaints from hip replacement patients. The majority of hip replacement patients who have the ASR devices have been successful. However, the company advises that anyone who has had the recalled hip replacements implanted to visit their doctor for a checkup. The company has volunteered to pay for the medical costs required to remedy the recalled hip implants.

Patients who have had to undergo surgery are often left with permanent scars and a long process of physical therapy. The last thing any hip replacement patient wants is to recover from a hip implant only to find out that they require a second hip replacement because the first was defective. If I were a victim, I would be outraged! Johnson and Johnson should be held completely accountable for their product and resulting pain and suffering. Had the company responded to the hip replacement complaints in a timely manner there may have been numerous patients that would have otherwise avoided this catastrophe.
