The toddler suffered critical injuries in the backyard pool of the Riverside County home. It is not clear at this time how the child fell into the water.
My thoughts and prayers are with the young victim of this terrible swimming pool accident. I am relieved to hear the child survived and I wish the victim the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.
California Swimming Pool Accident Statistics
The California Department of Public Health reported that in the year 2009, 424 people were killed and 1,605 were injured in California swimming pool accidents. According to the CDC, California is one of only 10 states where drowning surpasses all other causes of death to children age 14 and under. The Orange County Fire Authority reports that 75 percent of all preschoolers who drown are only out of the sight of a parent or guardian for five minutes or less. Near drowning incidents are also extremely dangerous because being underwater for an extended period of time can leave a young victim with irreversible brain injury.
Swimming Pool Safety Tips
With Memorial Day and summer quickly approaching, it is important to remember a number of swimming pool safety tips that could save lives. The best way to prevent a drowning accident is to provide constant supervision to children who have access to a swimming pool. All pool areas should be surrounded on all sides by a fence. Toys and other attractive items to children should be kept away from the pool area. The area around the pool should be kept clear and it should be properly maintained to limit the chances of a falling accident. The pool area should have a working gate that is kept locked at all times.
If a child is injured on your property and in your swimming pool, remember, you could be held liable. Injured swimming pool accident victims can seek compensation for all medical expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
