Vehicle Defect Recalls Surge in 2009

Auto makers, in 2009, recalled the most number of defective autos since the last five years, according to an article in Detroit News. Officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that in 2009, auto makers recalled 16.4 million vehicles, which is the highest annual tally since 2005. Leading these recalls was Toyota Motor Corp., which recalled 4.87 million vehicles, most of those for sudden acceleration problems. Ford came in second with 4.5 million vehicles largely because of its recall involving faulty cruise control switches that posed a fire hazard. General Motors recalled 2.2 million vehicles; Chrysler 590,000; Honda recalled 454,000 primarily for airbag defects; Nissan 706,000; Hyundai and Kia about 1.3 million.

Riverside Car Accident Causes Fatal Injuries

Frankie G. Hill, 46, was killed in a Riverside car accident after the vehicle she was driving struck another pickup truck on the Ortega Highway the afternoon of January 13, 2010. According to a news report in The Desert Sun, Hill was driving a pickup when the vehicle crossed the double yellow lines on a curve and went right into the path of the other vehicle, near Grand Avenue. California Highway Patrol officials said Hill was trapped in her vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other pickup was treated and released from a local hospital. His passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries.

SUV Rollover Accident in Los Angeles Injures Nine

Nine people sustained injuries, one critically, in a Los Angeles car accident after a Toyota Sequoia SUV rolled over on the 210 Freeway. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the crash occurred the evening of January 9, 2010 on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Irwindale when the SUV rolled over and went about 30 feet down an embankment.

California Highway Patrol officials said a 40-year-old man, who was a front passenger, was not wearing his seatbelt. He was ejected and sustained critical internal injuries. Two infants, two children and four other adults were also transported to the hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. The SUV's driver apparently told officials that she lost control of the vehicle because another driver made a sudden lane change in front of her.

My heart goes out to the critically injured victim in this case. I wish him the very best for a quick and complete recovery. I also hope and pray that the other injured victims make a full recovery.

Defective Play Yards Recalled for Suffocation Hazard

Dorel Juvenile Group is issuing a defective product recall for about 213,000 Safety 1st Disney Care Center play yards and Eddie Bauer Complete play yards because children could suffocate in them. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the one-piece metal bars supporting the floorboard of the bassinet attachment can come out of the fabric sleeves and create an uneven sleeping surface, posing the hazard of suffocation or positional asphyxiation.

Fatal San Diego Rollover Car Accident

Ray Castro, 16, was killed in a San Diego car accident after the car in which he was a passenger went out-of-control and fell off an elevated freeway interchange in Mission Valley, 10news reports. California Highway Patrol officials said Ray was traveling in a 1993 Corolla that overturned on the connector between the 15 and 8 freeways, the night of January 5, 2010. The teenager was ejected from the sedan and died as a result of blunt-force injuries shortly after the crash. Several others were also seriously injured in this crash. CHP officials are still looking into what caused this fatal car accident.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ray Castro for their shocking and sudden loss. Apparently, he died minutes before his 17th birthday. Tragic! SUV Rollover Accident Injures Seven

Seven people sustained injuries in an SUV rollover accident on the Highway 101 the afternoon of December 31, 2009, the Ventura County Star reports. The accident occurred when Kyle Homad, 23, lost control of the SUV and crashed. A tanker truck traveling in the same direction as the SUV tried to move from the third to the second lane, causing another driver who was in the second lane to swerve into the lane where the SUV was. This sudden movement caused Homad to lose control of the SUV and crash. The other driver remained at the scene but the driver of the big rig that attempted to make the unsafe lane change, left the scene, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Two Killed in Los Angeles Car Accident

Timothy Wallace, 21 and another man were killed in a Los Angeles car accident after their car rolled over, according to a CBS news report. The bodies of Wallace and the other man, also 21, were found the morning of December 30, 2009 in a field near the 6600 block of East Avenue K in Lancaster. California Highway Patrol officials determined that their deaths were the result of a traffic accident. A 2008 Nissan with side damage was found near the men and in a ditch about 100 feet off the road. CHP investigators believe the car must have rolled several times and that the men may have been ejected from the vehicle.

Riverside Rollover Car Accident Claims Life of Teenager

Geovanni Maciel, 18, was killed in a Riverside car accident after he lost control of his Honda Accord and crashed, The Press Enterprise reports. Maciel was driving a Honda Accord west on Lincoln Street in Lake Elsinore, early morning December 27, 2009, when it went out of control, struck several trees and rolled over numerous times. Maciel was ejected from the Honda and pinned under the vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital where he died a few hours after the car crash.

Orange County Woman Run Over by Her Own Car

An elderly woman was critically injured in an Orange County car accident after her van rolled back and pinned her against a fence post. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Anaheim police were called to the woman's home on Katella Avenue the afternoon of December 24, 2009, where they found her trapped under a Chrysler Town & Country van that had rolled and pushed her on to a fence post. The woman was apparently unloading the van in the driveway of the home, when it moved back and ran over her. Firefighters had to use a hydraulic system to lift the car off the woman. She was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries.

I deeply sympathize with this woman for the horrific injuries she has suffered in this unfortunate accident. I hope and pray that she recovers completely from her critical injuries. This victim will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Tire Tread Separation Causes Orange County Car Accident

One person sustained injuries in an Orange County car accident after a Chevy Blazer veered across traffic lanes and collided with a Mini Cooper on the 5 Freeway in Anaheim. According to a news report in the Orange County Register, the car accident occurred on December 18, 2009 near Ball Road. A white Chevy Blazer SUV apparently lost a tread from its rear right tire, swerved across lanes and hit a blue Mini Cooper, California Highway Patrol officials said. One person was injured in the crash, but the extent of the injuries is not yet known.

It is indeed fortunate that this accident did not result in a rollover or cause more injuries. I hope the victim did not sustain serious injuries and wish him/her the very best for a quick and complete recovery.

Timothy Berkich, 29, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident, after he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed the morning of December 19, 2009. According to a news report in the San Bernardino Sun, Berkich lost control of his 1991 Ford Ranger while driving near the intersection of Braceo and Nielsen roads. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.

San Diego Fatal SUV Rollover Accident

Veronica Elizabeth Aguirre, 17 was killed in a San Diego car accident after she lost control of her SUV and crashed early morning on December 11, 2009. According to a 10news report, the fatal SUV rollover accident occurred on westbound Mountain Meadow Road at Champagne Boulevard in the Hidden Meadows area of San Diego. California Highway Patrol officials said Veronica was the driver and only person in the Kia Sportage SUV, which rolled over multiple times. Officials are looking into the possibility the deadly accident was alcohol-related.

Woman Injured in Los Angeles Rollover Car Accident

A female driver was hospitalized December 8, 2009, with injuries she sustained in a Los Angeles car accident after she apparently lost control of her sedan and crashed. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the car accident occurred at Hyde Park Boulevard and Eighth Avenue. Los Angeles police are still investigating the cause of this injury crash.

Salmonella Tainted California Beef Causes Food Poisoning Concerns

A California beef company has recalled more than 20,000 pounds of ground beef over serious food poisoning concerns. All Headline News reports that this is the company's second beef recall this year. This time they are warning about beef contaminated with a deadly, drug-resistant strain of salmonella. The meat has apparently sickened two people in Arizona who have tested positive for "Salmonella Newport." This strain of salmonella is resistant to several commonly prescribed drugs, increasing the risk of hospitalization, ineffective treatment or death.
