Dangerous and Defective Cribs Recalled After Three Infant Deaths

Generation 2 Worldwide has issued a defective product recall for its drop-side cribs after three infant deaths were reported in connection with the products. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning parents that their children are at serious risk of injury or death due to strangulation or suffocation hazards these cribs pose. The crib's plastic hardware can break and cause the drop-side to detach from the corner of the crib. This creates a space into which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocated. Also, the crib's mattress support can detach from the crib frame creating a hazardous space in which a child could become trapped.

Toyota had to be "Pushed" to Recall Defective Vehicles

Federal officials are saying that Toyota was not very forthcoming about taking corrective action or issuing a vehicle defect recall in connection with millions of vehicles recalled over faulty gas pedals and floor mats. According to a news report in the Detroit Free Press, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters that Toyota had to be pushed every step of the way by federal officials to take corrective action in the interest of consumer safety. That "pushing" culminated in an unprecedented vehicle recall and with the Japanese auto maker suspending manufacturing and sales of eight vehicle models including its top-selling Corolla and Camry.

Graco Recalls 1.5 Million Strollers after Children Get Fingers Severed

Graco has issued a defective product recall for about 1.5 million strollers after the children's products manufacturer received several reports of children's finger tips getting cut off by stroller hinges. According to an Associated Press news report, Graco has received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the stroller's canopy hinge as it was being opened or closed. Of those cases, five children had their finger tips severed while two children sustained cuts on their finger tips.

Defective Play Yards Recalled for Suffocation Hazard

Dorel Juvenile Group is issuing a defective product recall for about 213,000 Safety 1st Disney Care Center play yards and Eddie Bauer Complete play yards because children could suffocate in them. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the one-piece metal bars supporting the floorboard of the bassinet attachment can come out of the fabric sleeves and create an uneven sleeping surface, posing the hazard of suffocation or positional asphyxiation.

Defective Product Recall Issued for Catheters

Medical device company ev3 Inc. has issued a defective product recall for catheters that could crack and result in serious personal injuries to patients. According to a news report, the company in November sent a letter to customers about the problem and telling to stop using the Trailblazer Support Catheter. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the defective catheters were distributed in September and October. These devices are thin, flexible tubes that are inserted into a vein or body cavity to allow drainage of fluid or to allow access to a surgical instrument. The company has not said whether any patients were injured as a result of these defective products.

Company Recalls Defective Car Seat Carrier that Pose Fall Hazard for Infants

Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. has issued a defective product recall for about 447,000 of its infant car seat carriers including some that are branded with Eddie Bauer, Cosco and Disney logos. According to an Associated Press news report, there have been dozens of reports of the car seat carrier's handle coming loose and causing injuries to young children. There have been at least three injuries to babies including bumps, bruises and a head injury. So far, the company has also received 77 reports of the child restraint handle fully or partially coming off. Federal officials are warning consumers who own these products to immediately stop using the seat's carrying handle. The breakage is apparently caused by the defective bolts that attach the handle to the seat. This can cause the handle to detach and create a fall hazard for infants.

JC Penney Recalls Defective Gas Grills for Fire Hazard

JC Penney has issued a defective product recall for more than 5,000 Cooks Outdoor Grills because the grills pose a fire and burn injury hazard to consumers. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the company has received 11 reports of fires as a result of inadequate drainage. The drip pan on the grill apparently does not allow for proper drainage leading to potential fire hazards. So far no injuries have been reported.

ATVs Recalled for Steering Defects

BRP has issued a defective product recall for nearly 2,400 0f the 2010 model year Can-Am all-terrain vehicles. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the dynamic power steering in these ATVs can fail causing sudden loss of steering control. This could pose a risk of serious injury or death to riders. The company has apparently received one report of an incident, but no reports of injuries or fatalities yet.

Volvo Recalls Vehicles for Seatbelt Defects

Volvo will issue a vehicle defect recall for about 8,438 of its 2010 XC60 SUVs because of a problem that could cause the seatbelt to become detached from the seat frame during a side impact crash. According to a report in Left Lane News, the problem was discovered during crash testing. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which released a report on the problem, stated that the driver's seat side cover panel or seat control panel in certain driver-side collisions may cause the seatbelt to detach.

2.1 Million Defective Cribs Recalled

Federal officials have issued a defective product recall for more than 2.1 million drop-side cribs made by Stork Craft Manufacturing, in the single biggest crib recall in the nation's history. According to an MSNBC news report, this product recall involves 1.2 million cribs in the United States and about 1 million in Canada where the company is based. Apparently, these cribs have a serious product defect where the drop-side plastic hardware can break or deform causing the drop-side to detach. This basically creates a space between the drop side and the crib mattress where infants can become entrapped and suffocate. Such unforeseen drop-side detachment can also cause dangerous fall injuries to young children.

Umbrella Strollers Recalled for Injury Hazard to Children

Maclaren is issuing a defective product recall for about 1 million umbrella strollers because of a side hinge that poses serious injury risk to young children. According to an MSNBC news report, a side hinge mechanism in these defective strollers poses the risk of cutting or amputating a child's fingers when the stroller is being opened or closed. This product recall applies to all Maclaren strollers that were sold in the United States since 1999. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has apparently received reports of 15 incidents in which children were hurt in the past 10 years.

Nissan Recalls Sentra Sedans for Defective Brakes

Nissan North America is issuing a vehicle defect recall for more than 10,500 model year 2009 Sentra sedans that come equipped with Bosch master cylinders because of the risk of brake fluid leaking from the master cylinders. According to a news report in Automotive Fleet, the amount of brake fluid that is in the master cylinder reservoir could decrease to below the minimum level causing the system warning indicator to light up. The brakes at this point will not function properly.

GM Cars Recalled For Fire Hazard

General Motors has issued a vehicle defect recall involving about 53,000 Chevy, Pontiac and Saturn cars over a possible fire danger. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the auto maker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have issued a recall after determining that a fuel leak can lead to a vehicle fire. The recalled models include 2006-2007 Chevy Cobalt; 2007 Pontiac G5; and 2006-2007 Saturn Ion.

Chrysler, Mazda Issue Auto Product Defect Recalls

Chrysler is issuing a vehicle defect recall for many of its rear wheel drive Chrysler and Dodge models because they may have been built without a front wheel spindle nut. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, this could basically lead to a tire-wheel separation when the vehicle is in motion leading to a serious car accident. The models affected by this recall include: Chrysler 300 2009-2010; Dodge Challenger 2009 and 2010 models; and Dodge Charger 2009-2010. When the recall begins, dealers will inspect the tire and wheel assembly and if necessary, repair the spindle nut installation at no charge to the consumer.

Defective Child Safety Car Seats Recalled

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a defective product recall for Mia Moda child safety car seats. The federal agency has recalled 5,540 Mia Moda infant and child seats with their bases, and models Viva and Viva Supreme. These child safety seats apparently have sharp edges that can cut the harness. There is also the possibility of the car seat's base cracking in the event of a car accident. NHTSA officials warn that children in these car seats may not be properly restrained and their risk of injury or death is heightened. Consumers who own these defective products are asked to immediately stop using them. The manufacturer will give registered owners a full refund and official recall notices will start going out this month.

Federal Officials Open New Auto Product Defect Investigation Into Toyota Pickups

A federal agency has opened a new vehicle defect investigation into corrosion issues on 218,000 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has apparently opened a preliminary probe into spare tires and brake lines on 2000 and 2001 model year Toyota Tundra pickup trucks. According to the Detroit News, the agency has so far received 20 reports about Tundra pickups where the spare tires separated and severe frame corrosion has led to brake failure. There have been 15 reports alleging that the "upper body mounted spare tire separated from the rear crossmember and five reports alleging broken brake lines at the proportioning valve that is located on the driver's side of the rear crossmember at upper shock mount."

Toyota Recalls 3.8 Million Cars for Defective Floor Mats

Toyota Motor Corp. will issue a massive vehicle defect recall involving 3.8 million cars in the United States to address problems with a floor mat that could cause the accelerator to get stuck and cause a car accident. According to an Associated Press news report, the recall will involve the 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry; 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon; 2004-2009 Toyota Prius; 2005-2010 Tacoma; 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra; 2007-2010 Lexus ES350; and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.

Mitsubishi Recalls Crossovers for Airbag Defect

Mitsubishi is issuing a vehicle defect recall for about 530 of its Endeavor sport utility vehicles from the 2010 model year. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, Mitsubishi officials are saying that the retainer bracket, which is used for the seat-mounted side airbag frames, may not have been properly welded and could fail in the event of a car accident. The product recall only includes vehicles manufactured between May 26 and July 28, 2009. Dealers will check the weld and, if necessary, replace the seatback assembly free of charge when the recall begins this month.

Food Poisoning Alert: Cases of Salmonella Contaminated Parsley Recalled

Muranaka Farm Inc. is recalling 1,005 cases of parsley distributed in 10 states including California over food poisoning concerns. The Moorpark, California, company says it is issuing the voluntary recall because the parsley may be contaminated with salmonella, according to an Associated Press news report. The recall involves cases of 60-count fresh bunched parsley. Apparently, a sampling conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), showed bacteria in the parsley. The contaminated parsley cases were distributed mostly in California, but were also sent to Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

Defective Tires Recalled for Possibility of Tread Separation

Pirelli is issuing a defective product recall for certain batches of its Pzero Corsa tires because tire tread separation can occur at high speeds increasing the risk of a car accident. According to a news report in Consumeraffairs.com, the recalled tires were manufactured between June 2007 and July 2009. Partial tread and/or belt edge separation can apparently occur at high speeds at and over 168 mph. Such tread or belt edge separation can result in a serious car accident. Pirelli has not yet provided a recall notification schedule or remedy for the product defect.
